CLT HOUSE IN QUEBEC
Héronnière House
This project innovates in many aspects. It is built to passive house standard and the process used to laminate CLT panels is unique. Furthermore, the engineer developed an audacious system to support split levels from the roof. To reach passive house standard, walls are rated R-42, the roof R-89 and the radiant slab R-50. The insulation applied on the CLT is made of wood fiber panels (2’x8’x11”) and connected by screws with a plastic washer. The CLT acts as a vapor barrier and Siga tape seals the construction where needed. The blow door test confirming the tightness of the house gave a result of 0.47 when passive house accepts 0.6 air changes per hour at 50 Pascals!
The process used by C.L.T. Outaouais enabled to leave room for electrical as well as for special connections to support floor panels with the roof. Indeed, each layer of the CLT can be processed before the lamination done by a vacuum press with a capacity of 12’6”x35′ max. The engineering firm modelled the CLT structure and all steel connections in cadwork 3D. The 3D model from cadwork enabled to plan all the wiring with an electrician before C.L.T Outaouais started lamination. Shop drawings for CLT and for steel have been obviously extracted from the 3D model as well as installation plans. The installer knew how much each panel weigh and could visualize the 3D model onsite on his tablet using the cadwork 3D viewer.
